Bellinger River
Bellinger River is located 500km north of Sydney, it rises within the great dividing range descending 1150ms and is 69kilometers long. It joins Kalang river not far from the mouth, the local town of Urunga is a small town popular with tourists. Commercial fishing is banned in both Bellinger and Kalang River which means there is some really great fishing in the Bellinger River.
At the mouth of the river anglers can target Tailor, Mulloway, Bream and Luderick along the long break wall. Or take the 4wd beach access from Mylestom down to the northern side of the mouth to target whiting and get some sand worms with the kids. There are some good land based fishing spots in Bellinger River, however a small boat or kayak is required to access some of the better fishing spots.
Fishing the Bellinger River anglers can expect:
- Bream
- Flathead
- Whiting
- Tailor
- Mulloway
- Luderick
Further upstream anglers can fish for Mangrove Jack and up in the freshwater reaches native Australian Bass.
There are some great weed beds to target Bream on a rising tide, and then Flathead on the outgoing tide. There is yabbies beds to pump yabbies and target Whiting. Deep holes for mulloway and further upstream some great structure for Mangrove Jack and Australian Bass.
Fishing offshore from Bellinger River or Urunga, the mouth has an okay bar crossing, but large swells do batter the coast and the sand bars can move over time. The offshore fishing is great.
