A good mulloway fishing spot close to Ballina, bait like strip mullet works well, however the Mulloway will always take big soft plastics and even hard body lures here, incoming tide is best. Bream and Tailor are also around, use metal slugs for Tailor.

Where to go fishing near Black Head?

  • Broadwater Beach Good bream fishing here in Winter, 4 wheel drive access, use bait and look for the deeper gutters with some rocky formations.
  • South Ballina Beach Some great gutters along south Ballina beach, 4wd access is available via South Ballina Access Trail. Bait fishing works best on an incoming tide along these gutter, Bream, Tailor, whiting and Mulloway are regular catches.
  • Woodburn Bridge Bream fishing along the park, a good spot to soak local baits and fish with the family.
  • Broadwater Bridge Great bream fishing along here.
  • Wardell Bridge A popular fishing spot near Ballina for Mulloway, live mullet is the best bait, however mulloway will also take soft plastics slowly hopped along the bottom. Land based access on the southern bank.
  • Moylans Lane A great land based fishing spot for Bream and Mulloway on live bait. Mulloway will also take large soft plastics slowly bounced off the bottom.
  • Pimlico Island The sand flats here are a good place to pump for Yabbies and on the incoming tide fish for whiting.
  • Iron Peg Calm weather only! Can be a very dangerous spot. Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Tailor, Bream, Luderick and Mulloway are all caught off here. Access to deeper water.
  • Flat Rock Bream and Luderick on the northern side close to the beach. Tailor can also be caught here, try metal slugs 70g.
  • Lighthouse Beach Good winter fishing for Bream and Tailor, find a good gutter on an incoming tide.
  • Emigrant Creek Jetties Fish along the creek bank and around the jetty structures for Bream on lures, soft plastics sunk down beside pylons and hard body lures retrieved under the platforms works well.
  • Emigrant Creek old Bridge Old bridge structure holds Bream, Flathead and Mulloway. Mulloway best on live baits however will take soft plastics.
  • Emigrant Creek Mouth Fish the channel markers for Mulloway. Sand flat to the right is a good spot to cast around the mouth with soft plastics for Flathead on a run out tide.
  • Ballina Canals Mostly bream around the jetty structures, good spot to cast lures.
  • Richmond River Jetties The jetties along here are well worth casting lures at for Bream. Soft plastics cast beside the pylon and let sink works well.
  • Mobbs bay gutters On the outgoing tide, the draining channels and gutters fish well for flathead on soft plastics.
  • Mobbs Bay Walls The gaps in the rock walls are a great place to fish on the outgoing tide for Flathead as the water drains out, soft plastics bounced off the bottom work well.
  • Mobbs bay anchorage wall Drift along the rock wall for Bream and Flathead. Around the entrance some big Mulloway are caught particularly on a run out tide, live bait works awesome.
  • Mobbs Bay Yabbies Good yabbies banks throughout Mobbs Bay, fish the incoming tide for Whiting. Fish the outgoing tide for Flathead, soft plastics work well.
  • North Creek Sand Flats Good spot to pump yabbies and on high tide fish for Whiting.
  • Fishery Creek Mouth Bream and Luderick along the rock wall on an incoming tide. Bream mostly inside the harbour, a good lure fishing spot.
  • Prospect Bridge Can park on the south side of the bridge on side road, more for dedicated anglers, Bream, Flathead and Mulloway at night. Incoming tide is the best time to fish here.
  • Faulks Reserve A nice park and family friendly fishing spot in Ballina. Fish along here with strip mullet, pilchards and herring for Bream and Flathead.
  • Captain Cook Park Boardwalk Good fishing spot right in Ballina for Bream particularly at night. Drifting soft plastics down the side of a pylon works well or bait dropped down the side.
  • Lance Ferris Wharf Friendly fishing spot in Ballina, mostly bream are caught here. Use bait such as strip mullet or prawns.
  • Regatta Ave Boat Harbour Good Bream and Flathead fishing off the rock wall, bait works best. Bream around the boats.
  • North Creek old wharf Good structure here holds Bream and Luderick. To the south, walk the bank casting metal slugs out for Tailor or soak some bait for Bream and Flathead.
  • Missingham Bridge The tide can move fast through here so it is best fished on the smaller tides. Bream, Flathead and Mulloway on live bait. Flathead can be caught here on soft plastics weighted heavily. Good access both north and southside.
  • Shaws Bay Pick a spot along the wall into Shaws Bay, this Ballina fishing spot is best fished with bait either live or not, Bream, Flathead and Luderick are the main catches in Shaws Bay.
  • The Light House Big sea wall, hard to fish at times has there is strong current and large swells. Bream, Tailor and Mulloway are the main catches, fish either side of the wall weather permitting.
  • South Wall Ballina At the end of the seawall anglers can target Spanish Mackerel in Summer. Good spot to live bait for Mulloway. Tailor on metal slugs. Bream all year round. A lot of tidal movement here, best fished on small tides and change of tides.
