Bohle River is a medium sized estuary system just north of Townsville. It’s close proximity to Townsville means it is fished heavily, however some of Townsville’s biggest Barramundi are caught in the deep holes. The river systems here from Bohle River and southwards start to really change ecosystem and surroundings compared to their northern counter parts – gone are the lush rainforest covered mountains replaced with sand flats.
Anglers can expect a system with all the features of a larger system, sand flats, mangrove lined banks, deep holes and structure.
Lure fishing the Bohle River anglers should expect to catch Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Grunter, Golden Snapper and crabs. Good Barramundi are caught at the mouths of the feeder creeks in early summer during the run off. Large barra are often caught at the mouth of the Bohle River.
Outside of the mouth of the Bohle River to the east in the bay is a rocky shoreline which should be fished from half to high tide, working lures along here can produce Mangrove Jacks, Trevally, salmon and flathead.
Just inside the mouth is a deep rock bottom on the eastern side of the river that fishes well for Barramundi, Jacks, Bream, Trevally and Cod. Anglers should cast into the tide and let their lures sink down close to or hitting the rocks.
Further upstream are several deep holes as marked on the map above. These holes fish well for Barramundi and Grunter, and should be fished 2 hours either side of the tide change.
Out the front of the river mouth is Halifax Bay on calmer days is a great place to sight fish for Trevally and Permit.
