Located at the top of the Whitsunday region, Bowen has a small population of roughly 12,000 people, which means the offshore fishing is relatively untapped. Tourism is popular particularly with fishermen, so don’t get to excited! You will still to head out with a plan and some GPS marks to catch fish!
Like most of the Queensland coast Bowen suffers from the same South East trade winds. Offshore from Bowen is protected from the Great Barrier reef however trade winds can still kick up a nasty swell. The closest great barrier reef is Gould reef, which is roughly a 70km run from Bowen. However boating don’t have to cover that distance to catch a feed of reef fish. The inshore islands have fringing reefs which is good for both fishing and spear fishing and are within 1 to 18NM from the Bowen Harbour. North Head, Gloucester, Holbourne and Middle all have great reef fishing.
