Cleaverville is 40km from Karratha with 13km of well-maintained dirt road. The camp is clearly sign posted and is hugely popular amongst caravaner’s in the winter months. There is plenty of camping and fishing spots at Cleaverville which makes this place so attractive.
There are good land based fishing spots at Cleaverville. The creek to the south has a good rock platform west of the boat ramp that provides access to deeper water. Fishing the creek anglers can expect Bream, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Flathead, Trevally and Queenfish. The beaches and rocky headlands along the coast are also worth cast for Trevally, Queenies and Bream.
As always in these remote parts of Western Australia, a small boat really opens up the options when fishing here. Launching a boat can be done at the creek or the main Cleaverville camp spot. The creek launch is rock hard and suitable for boats under 6m, the beach launch is hard packed. There are some good reefs not far from shore where anglers can expect Emperor, Black Jewfish and the odd Coral Trout.
Land based anglers can fish the rock platform to the west of the boat ramp. It is best fished during neap tides. Poppers and metal slugs will hook Trevally and Queenfish. Use soft plastics to bounce along the bottom of the deep channel for Threadfin Salmon and the odd Jewfish. Towards the mouth in the shallow waters Bream and Flathead can be targeted. The bream move onto the shallow as the tide rises, try using small hard body minnows slowly cranked over the shallows. Flathead lay in wait on the out going tide, they are suckers for pink lures.
Further up the creek anglers can target Mangrove Jack and Cod. The southern arm has a rock bar close to 2 feeder creeks, this is a interesting scenario for fishing. There are cod and Mangrove Jack around here. The 2 eastern arms have a series of bends with deeper holes, during neap tides there is a good chance of Threadfin Salmon using vibes and soft plastics jigged along the bottom.
Working the snags with soft plastics and deep diving hard bodies is a sure way of hook some Mangrove Jack throughout this creek. There is also a lot of small Trevally around opposite the boat ramp on the left of the southern creek.
The beaches and rocky headlands are well worth a fish for Trevally, Queenfish, Bream, Flathead and Cod over the rocks. A soft plastic slowly worked over the rocks is a great way to tempt some big cod in smashing a lure.
A fish is a bonus in this beautiful spot.
Offshore fishing spots Cleaverville produce some great fishing. Grass Emperor are the main catch, however Tuskfish, Jewfish and Coral Trout are all a possibility. A sounder is definitely a must, but small boat anglers do not have to travel to far offshore for good fishing, 1-2km.
