The Corio Bay estuary system is very large, the mouth of the river is almost 3km wide and when the tide is draining it can happen very quickly with strong currents and rips, caution is advised. The Corio Bay estuary system is home to several small creeks, Fishing Creek, Deep Creek and Waterpark Creek which is the main creek and travels inland a long distance. Fresh water runs into the bay from Waterpark Creek.
Corio Bay is surrounded by National Park so respect should be advised when fishing, only take what you need. Waterpark Creek upstream of Kellys Landing (see boat ramp Kellys Landing on map) is closed to bait-netting however the bay is still open to commercial netting. Bait must be collected in the bay for use back up the creek.
The main fish species found in Corio Bay are Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Trevally and Queenfish in July, August and September. Barramundi can be caught during the Summer months however it helps if you have local knowledge or spend a few days on the water to find them. Best bet for Barramundi fishing is targeting the low tide holes, rocky edges and during the run out tide along mangroves. Take caution above Corbetts Landing as their are numerous rock-bars. The Trevally, Queenfish and Mackerel are best targeted toward the mouth of the river – look for any structure causing eddies as debris often washes into the mouth. Spot fishing Trevally on the shallow sand banks can also be effective.
Around and outside of the mouth keep an eye on your sounder for any gravelly surface for good Grunter fish. Yabby banks are throughout Corio Bay – best bet is Fishing Creek and toward SandFly Creek to the west.
