Mary river runs through Maryborough and provides access to some great fishing spots around Maryborough. The Mary River is usually dirty water, upstream is freshwater which makes it the perfect environment for Barramundi and Crocodiles. In fact Maryborough marks the start of Barramundi fishing.
Barramundi, Threadfin and Blue salmon, Mangrove Jack and Jewfish are some of the prize catches from Mary River and to River Heads. Bream, Flathead and Whiting are also abundant, Flathead are best targeted in around the mouth of small feeder creeks on an outgoing tide. Towards the mouth of the Mary River, the shallow flats fish well for Flathead and Summer whiting on an incoming tide, the water also clears up around the mouth. The tide often runs hard here on an outgoing tide, so neap tides are the best times to fish the deeper holes.
During the big tides the current really rips through on the outgoing tide and is best fished 1 hour either side of the tide or try to find spots outside the main current. The neap tides are a bit more gentle and anglers can find fish schooling in the deeper holes.
Further upstream the Mary River has Barramundi and Mangrove Jack, there is no fishing within 400m of a barrage. Past the barrage is fresh water and is stocked with Australian Bass which are great fun on light tackle. There are also stocked impoundments close by, Lenthall and Monduran are both stocked with Barramundi, Bass and Golden Perch.
During the summer months anglers can target prize fish like Barramundi and Mangrove Jack. Summer whiting and Flathead are also abundant and the Sandy Straits offer some great sand bars and clear water.
Big Jewfish hide out in the deeper holes, along with Tailor. Flathead are around the small drop offs and small feeder creek mouths throughout the entire river.
