The Murray River in Western Australia flows in from the Peel Inlet and stretches 134km into the Peel Region. The Murray River is one of few rivers close to Perth that hasn’t been dammed for public water supply, leaving its natural flow and beauty intact.
The saltwater section of the Murray River from South Yunderup to Pinjarra is home to hard fighting Black Bream. This section of the river is lined with heavy snags and should be fished from October until the heavy rains in Winter start pushing the bream downstream.
Murray’s bend near Ravenswood is a great place to start targeting Black Bream on lures in the Murray River.
The Murray River Black Bream are some of the toughest fighting Bream in South East Western Australia. Combined with very snaggy river beds anglers are guaranteed to lose some lures.
It is recommended to increase your leader to 8-12lb and remove the middle treble from hard body lures. Small suspending hard body minnows lures fish well in the amongst the snags of the Murray River.
Also small soft plastics 1.5” – 2.5” in the motor oil or pumpkin colour also work well.
Mulloway and whiting can also be caught in the Murray, the flats in the Peel inlet also fish well for Whiting on poppers.
Further Upstream the Murray River is stocked with Trout. During spring the trout spread out into the brooks and upstream following their natural instincts. The best fishing for trout occurs from September to November, and lure fisherman should target trout in the streams or rapids.
In the spring months the small brooks diverging from the main Murray River are also worth a try.
For the rest of the year the trout are held up in deep holes and near any brooks with running water – as they seek refuge from the heat.
The river also has a small population of redfin which take pretty much any bait or lures.
