Poison Creek Fishing

Located between Cape Arid and Cape Pasely Poison Creek in relatively sheltered in a bay and produces fantastic Salmon fishing. A 4WD is necessary to access the beach at Poison Creek, but once on the beach it is easy to travel along the hard pack sand looking for schools of Salmon, schools of fish and deep channels.

Esperance’s best Salmon fishing spot

The Salmon fishing around Poison Creek is renowned as some of the best Salmon fishing in Australia, with fish often between the 4-6kg weight. Salmon can be caught around here most of the year, however Summer produces the beach fishing at Poison Creek for Salmon. Metal slugs, sinking stick baits and even poppers are all good methods to target the Salmon, they are also easily spotted in large schools travelling close to shore in the deeper gutters.

Poison Creek fishing also produces Skippy, Tailor, Herring, Mulloway and large sharks particularly when the Salmon are around. Night fishing with vibes is a great way to target Mulloway and Herring.

Salmon fishing is good all year round with fish from 2-5kg regularly taken, however from November to February the Salmon fishing is even better and the average size is 5-8kg.

The Herring run follows after the Salmon run however Herrings are available all year around.

Where to go fishing near Poison Creek?

  • Taylor Street Jetty The jetty has good catch of King George Whiting, Herring and Silver Trevally.
  • Ten Mile Lagoon Australian Salmon, Herring and Skippy, best targeted on metal slugs.
  • Wylie Head Samson Fish and the odd Mulloway from Wylie Head.
  • Stokes Inlet This 6km long inlet produces fantastic Black Bream fishing on soft plastics and small hard body minnows. When the inlet is open fisherman can also target Mulloway, Skippy and the odd Australian Salmon.
  • Thomas River The Thomas River is located in the Cape Aria national park around 80km from Esperance. The beach at Thomas River produces fantastic Salmon fishing during the Salmon season, Easter and September to October is the best time to target them. The beach fishing around Thomas River mouth is also well known for producing Mulloway and skippy.Cape Arid offers some great camping spots within the National Park which provide 4WD only access only to prime fishing spots.Beach launching near Thomas River is also possible where anglers will find Pink Snapper and King George Whiting not far offshore all year round.Salmon fishing is good all year round with fish from 2-5kg regularly taken, however from November to February the Salmon fishing is even better and the average size is 5-8kg.The Herring run follows after the Salmon run however Herrings are available all year around.
  • Point Malcolm Great fishing at Point Malcolm for Salmon, Mulloway and Herring on Slugs.
  • Pasley Island Bottom jig for Groper, Queen Snapper, Red Snapper, Pink Snapper, Cod and King George Whiting.
  • Kennedys Beach 4WD access only. Large herring and big Skippy, Salmon and the odd Mulloway.
  • Alexander Bay Large numbers of Salmon around Easter and September - October. Great rock fishing for Salmon and Herring. Also fishes well for Skippy.
  • Duke of Orleans Bay Great fishing for Bream, Whiting, Salmon and Herring. Can launch a small boat from the beach. Four wheel drive required.
  • Wharton Beach Wharton Beach provides great fishing for salmon all year round, however during Easter and September to October is the best time to target them.
  • Bandy Creek Deep Channels Fish the deep channels and rock wall around Bandy Creek for Black Bream. Since these isn't much current, small vibes and soft plastics work well.
  • Bandy Creek Sight cast Black Bream Sight Cast for bream in the creek, they will take small minnow lures and lightly weighted soft plastics. Bream are washed over the weir almost every year.
  • Chapmans Point Fish for Australia Salmon, Skippy and the odd Mulloway.
  • Tanker Jetty Famous amongst anglers in the South West. Fish the Tanker Jetty with medium sized lures can produce Bonito, Snook and the occasional Samson fish. During the Australia Salmon run March to May many will be found hanging around the Jetty, cast metal slugs and stick-baits for a fantastic fighting fish. Other species include Herring, Skippy, Whiting and Squid at night.  
  • Salmon Beach Good deep channels that fish well, use metal slugs, poppers and sinking stick baits for Australia Salmon all year round.
  • West Beach Esperance West Beach Esperance beach fishing for Australia Salmon, Skippy, Herring and the odd Mulloway.
  • Esperance Stockyards Good fishing for Salmon, Skippy, Herring, Silver Bream, Whiting and Flathead.
