The Pumicestone Passage extends from Caloundra in the north right down to the start of Brisbane. It separates the mainland from Bribie Island. Overall the passage some great fishing and it’s fairly easy to land some Flathead, Bream and Whiting. Other species lurk in the passage but are harder to catch are Tailor, Jewfish, Mangrove Jack and Trevally.
Getting access to some of the bestter fishing spots in the Pumicestone Passage requires a small boat or kayak. The weekends around Golden Beach Caloundra and to the south at Bongaree can be extremely busy, so week-day fishing missions are always more productive. There are also several marine reserves within the passage so check with fisheries before exploring.
Fishing the passage with light to medium spin rods with cover most species. 6-12lb line will be plently for Bream, Whiting, Flathead and the odd smaller trevally and tailor. Pink hard body lures and soft plastics are the go for actively feeding fish and Flathead. Check out Lively Lure’s in Caloundra, they have been making lures for this region for a long time.
Anglers wanting to target Mangrove Jacks in the feeder creeks like Coochin, Hussey, Glass House Mountain and Bullock creeks, should gear up to something a bit heavier. Anything over 12lb should handle the jacks in the creeks, although they do fight hard. Summer is the best time to target Mangrove Jacks on lures throughout the Pumicestone Passage.
Big Jewfish are some caught in the deeper channels around the navigation markers and in the deep holes. Anglers generally sit on live mullet baits, Spring is the best time. Although chasing Jewfish is a game of patience.
