Tin Can bay is a sleepy town where over half the population owns a boat, and for good reason. The clear waters of the Tin Can Bay inlet has some great fishing whether on land, kayak or by boat, beginners and experienced anglers can catch a fish.
There is an almost endless amount of yabbies to pump, most exposed sand banks will have yabbie holes, which make for great bait. Bream, Tarwhine, Whiting, Tarpon, Small Trevally and Flathead are the main catch. However squid and mangrove jack are also a possibility for the keen angler. Boaties can target Jewfish, Tuna, Trevally, Jacks, Grunter, Squire and all the bread butter species.
There are some easily accessible land based fishing spots in Tin Can Bay. Some popular spots are Crab Creek, Searys, Teebar and Norman point. These spots are best fished on the incoming tide, as fish will be pushing up onto the flats for a feed. Whiting and flathead are a great species to target, they can be caught on fresh yabbies. Flathead will also take small soft plastics, pink or red is a great colour.
Crab creek is just to the south and has a deeper hole to fish, bream and flathead are the main species here.
More adventurous anglers can walk the flats on an incoming tide to target small trevally and flathead. Mullens Creek Park at Cooloola Cove is the start of a small fishing adventure, from here anglers can walk the shallow flats towards the north, here anglers will find sea grass which hold Whiting, Flathead and Yellowfin Bream. Heading south and driving up Carland Creek road gives anglers access to some skinny waters, however crab pots are best used here.
Having a boat or kayak opens up so much more fishing opportunities at Tin Can. Checking out the sand bars during low tide is a good start if you’re hunting Flathead and Whiting, any beds that have yabbies usually hold good fishing during an incoming tide as they come up to feed.
During the summer months anglers can target the prized Mangrove Jack. Teebar, Searys and Schnapper Creek have good over hanging snags to cast into, also the docks and boats along Esplanade are great places to flick lures along particularly at early morning, dusk and into the night.
