Hull River, Tully River and Murray River, these 3 river systems are quite similar in length and structure features, mangrove lined banks, structure, flats and feeder creeks. All Rivers have fresh water running into them more or less dependent on recent rains.
All 3 rivers hold good mud crabs, places to drop the pots are in and around smaller feeder creeks and shallow banks that are almost exposed at low tide.
The 3 rivers all fish well in summer for Mangrove Jack and Barramundi, Flathead all year round and Trevally, Queenfish and Salmon in winter.
The Tully River is also quite shallow at the mouth, small boats and high tides are the best time to cross the channel. Tully River becomes shallow very quickly with boat access restricted to around the first 5km from the mouth. Tully River is best fished after a few days of rain if you are targeted Barramundi as the river cops both floodplain water and mountain run off. Other general estuary species can be caught in the saltwater.
Further up into the fresh water reaches is some of the best fresh water fishing for Sootie Grunter and Jungle Perch Far North Queensland has to offer. Keen fisherman will be rewarded making the extra effort to trek the bank side casting any small lures into deeper holes, eddies, structure and under shade. Surface fishing is great fun and the fresh water streams of the Tully River is an ideal place for this type of lure fishing. Jungle Perch and Sooties will take poppers all year round and almost any time of the day.
