Turkey Beach is a sleepy fishing town about 5-6 hours north of Brisbane. Fishing at Turkey Beach can be great at times particularly for Blue Salmon, Bream, Flathead and Cod. Mangrove Jack and Barramundi require a bit more work and are best tempted with Live bait, however working the snags up the smaller creeks with lures can produce good results particularly on an incoming tide. Further out the rocky headlands have Trevally, School Mackerel and Queenfish mostly. Around towards Richards Point there is coral reef and rocks, which have small coral trout, spanish and other reef fish including Blue Bone / Tuskfish. Land based fishing around Turkey Beach is great if you are willing to explore via 4wd into more remote spots. Low tides are great for this, as anglers can walk the banks and cast lures into the small ponds that fish are trapped in. This is an affective approach to target Mangrove Jack mainly in the warmer months.
The flats around Turkey Beach township are a good place to pump for yabbies, and on a high tide will produce Flathead, Bream and Whiting all year round.
Turkey Beach is heavily commercial fished, so fishing can be tough at times, having some spots in mind and a game plan is the best way to guarantee success. Mud crabs are around but you must work the tides as many spots dry out on a low tide.
For lure based anglers the smaller tributaries fish well on an incoming tide for Mangrove Jack in the warmer months. By catches will include Bream, Cod and Flathead with the odd barramundi. Some anglers will head upstream and wait for the tide to go out to then fish the remaining pools of water for mangrove Jacks. The mud/sand flats produce whiting, bream and flathead. There are several patches of grass/weed which is a great foraging place for Bream and Whiting.
In Winter the big bays fill with clear water where anglers can sight cast at schools of Blue Salmon, the bigger Salmon can also be found up to 100cm, however they mainly travel in pairs and are more flighty.
Barramundi school up during the neap tides, however they do get heavily targeted by commercial fishos. The deeper holes with slow current run are where the barras usually school up. There are plenty of big back currents with dirty water to sound for Barras. On the bigger tides the barra become more active at night coming up to a full moon. During this time they are best targeted near the rock bars.
