Land based fishing the Tweed River

There are many accessible land based fishing spots along the Tweed River and depending on the time of year produce some fun fishing for the family. The mouth of the river is great for bream in winter as they move down the river to spawn. Malloway are also around the mouth this time of year especially at night if you are ready to brace the cold weather. Flathead throughout the river all year round and walking the sandy flats is often well worth it. There are several good sand banks to pump yabbies for Whiting year round.

The seawalls give anglers access to some fast moving water and deep gutters past the surf for good tailor fishing. There are also numerous bridges, jetties and parks for families to safely fish from where you can expect Bream, Flathead and Whiting.

Some great spots are:

  • South head at the end of Letitia Road, bream and tailor, mulloway at night
  • Sand Pump station, it says NO fishing but no one seems to listen!
  • Cave Point, great for fishing with lures along the rock wall

Kayak and Boat fishing Tweed

Kayak fishing the Tweed River is a great option as the river has many shallow tributaries of the main channel which are full of sea grass. Here Bream, Flathead and Whiting forage amongst the grass, a run out tide is great for flathead while a run in tide is great for Bream. The ability to have a kayak to cross shallow sand bars to access these areas is priceless.

Recommended fishing gear for the Tweed River

Fish light to get the bite is the best bet! A 4-6kg spin outfit with braid and flurocarbon leader will cover most fishing in the Tweed River. Running ball sinkers with prawn, squid or pilchards is great bait. If lure fishing, small pink soft plastics with jig heads from 1/8 to ¾ ounce will cover most scenarios for flathead. Bream will take surface lures on top of sea grass beds early mornings, walk the down or small poppers. Small hard body lures work around jetties and any rocky structure.

Mulloway and Tailor will require a slightly heavier setup, but not to heavy. Live bait like whiting and pilchards work well for Mulloway.
