Walpole in the Great Southern region of Western Australia is a picturesque small town that has some fantastic fishing spots for land and boat based anglers. Approximately 60km west of Denmark and 450km east of Perth, Walpole waters are relatively unspoilt and it is quite easier to escape to a deserted beach for a fish.
The main feature of Walpole is Nornalup Inlet, which is fed by 2 main rivers Deep River and Frankland River. Nornalup Inlet has some fantastic light tackle fishing action, target fish species are Black Bream, King George and Yellow Fin Whiting, Skippy, Flathead and Silver Bream. Fishing Nornalup Inlet is best enjoyed with a boat as land based access can be tricky.
Walpole Inlet provides much the same species as Nornalup, Black Bream, King George and Yellow Fin Whiting, Skippy, Flathead and Silver Bream. The water is shallower in Walpole compared to Nornalup.
Fantastic Black Bream fishing along the river bank where the tree snags are. Casting small soft plastics and hard bodies deep into snags with light line is highly effective on Black Bream.
Great Black Bream fishing on light line, find the snags and start casting deep into them with soft plastics and hard body lures.
Redfin and Trout in the upper reaches.
Deep gutters and channels close to shore make fishing great here and attracts Mulloway, Australia Salmon, Tailor, Herring and other smaller species.
Great fishing for Australia Salmon and Mulloway, four-wheel drive needed to access.
Located about 30km east of Walpole is the Irwin Inlet which is fed by the Kent and Bow Rivers. The Irwin Inlet fishes food for Black Bream.

says:Hey mate, yep it’ll be cold, but a good time for Bream fishing. There is a good video of the Halco team at Walpole or Bremer Bay, fishing the flats with the Scorpion 35, the Jelly Prawn colour would be the go if the water is clear, plus they are pretty cheap and they’re Australian. The Ecogear SX40LC (long cast) is good on the flats also, just slow roll it with long pauses, they seem to be less effective once the lure starts hitting the bottom. The Austackle Ranger 40S and Atomic Hardz Crank 38 Shallow Diver are good lures for cranking, a continuous slow roll across the flats. As for soft plastics, I love the Squidgies Pro Wriggler 80mm and the Bug, 1/24 – 1/16 jig head. The Dragon Maggot 2.5inch has also been really effective for bream fishing Australia wide. You can also try using small vibes too, the bream will often just pick them up off the sand. I hope that helps, good luck and I hope you have a good trip! Would love to hear how you go.
